BCBA Test Content Outline

The BACB® blueprint of what a BCBA® must know — your fieldwork should build these skills. The 6th edition took effect in 2025.

What it means

The BCBA Test Content Outline (formerly the “Task List”) is the BACB®’s blueprint of the knowledge and skills a BCBA® must demonstrate, and the basis for the certification exam. The 6th edition took effect January 1, 2025. As the BACB® reminded certificants in its February 2026 newsletter, there is no longer any BACB document called a “task list” — only Test Content Outlines. Your fieldwork should focus on acquiring competence across its content areas, not just logging hours.

Example

Rather than only running programs, you deliberately get experience with assessment, program design, and supervision — the areas the outline covers.

Where it trips people up

It’s easy to accumulate hours that are heavy on one skill. Supervisors are expected to steer your fieldwork toward broad coverage of the outline, which also prepares you for the exam.
