If you are finishing BCBA fieldwork in the second half of 2026, one question decides a lot: will your application be reviewed under the current 2022 requirements, or under the 2027 requirements? The answer does not depend on when you accrued your hours, when you finished your coursework, or when the BACB approves you. It depends on one date and one word.
The rule: one date, and one word
The BACB states the cutoff plainly:
“To be reviewed under the current 2022 requirements, your complete application (including payment and all required documents) must be received by December 31, 2026.”
2027 BCBA and BCaBA Requirements: What You Need to Know, BACBFor fieldwork, the transition guidance says the same thing from the other side:
“All supervised fieldwork must meet the requirements in place at the time you submit your certification application.”
Guidance for Meeting the BCBA Requirements During the 2027 Transition, BACBSo a complete application received on December 31, 2026 is reviewed under the 2022 requirements. One that is complete on January 2, 2027 is reviewed under the 2027 requirements, even if every hour was accrued years earlier. The guidance adds that if you do not apply and meet the current requirements before January 1, 2027, you must meet the new requirements. The same date applies to BCaBA applications.
What “complete” means
A complete application has three parts, and the BACB needs all of them by December 31:
- The application itself, submitted in your BACB portal account.
- Payment. Until you pay, the application shows as “awaiting payment.”
- All required documents. This includes official transcripts, which your institution has to send directly to the BACB. You cannot upload them yourself. If you apply through Pathway 2, your program’s Pathway 2 Program Contact also has to submit a coursework attestation.
The third part is the one that catches people out, because it is the one you do not control. The Handbook is specific about the order:
“Do not request to have your institution submit official transcripts until you have submitted a certification application.”
BCBA Handbook, BACBThat means the transcript request can only start once your application is in, and after that it depends on your registrar. Many registrars slow down or close over the winter break, which is exactly when a December application needs them. Plan in weeks, not days: submit and pay early enough that the transcripts can arrive well before December 31.
There is one more condition. The Handbook says you apply once you have met all of the current eligibility requirements. A December application only works if your degree, your coursework, and your last month of fieldwork are already done.
If your application needs corrections
After everything arrives, the BACB can take up to 45 days to review an application, and applications are processed in the order they are received. Your fieldwork may also be audited during the review.
If an application is not approved, you receive action items in your portal. The Handbook gives you 90 days from submitting the application to meet the requirements. After that, you have to submit a new application and pay the fee again.
The BACB has not published how a December application that needs corrections in January is treated. What is clear is that a new application submitted in 2027 falls under the requirements in place at that time, which are the 2027 requirements. The safest reading is to treat December 31 as the date by which everything is right, not the date you start.
Applying in time does not mean testing in time
The deadline is for the application, not the exam. Once your application is approved, you have two years to pass the BCBA examination if you are in BACB jurisdiction, with up to 8 attempts.
The exam itself is not changing with the 2027 requirements. It has been based on the BCBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.) since January 1, 2025, and the transition guidance says there are no upcoming changes to it. There is no reason to rush the exam. The date that matters is the application.
What changes if you miss it
| Area | Complete application received by December 31, 2026 | Received on or after January 1, 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly fieldwork | 2022 requirements, one observation a month | 2027 requirements, 60 minutes of observation a month (90 for Concentrated) |
| Monthly forms | 2022 Monthly Fieldwork Verification Forms | 2027 Monthly Fieldwork Verification Forms |
| Hours per month | 20 to 130 | 20 to 160 |
| Concentrated supervision | 10% | 7.5% |
| Pathway 2 coursework | 2022 coursework requirements | 2027 coursework requirements |
| Pathways 3 and 4 | Available | No longer offered |
Sources: the BACB’s transition guidance and the BCBA Handbook. The highlighted values are the changes most likely to stop an application.
Three details in that table are easy to miss:
- Observation is the requirement most likely to trip up older months. Under 2027, a month needs observation minutes, not just an observation. Months already signed on 2022 forms have to meet the 2027 requirements and move onto 2027 forms. See moving qualifying hours from 2022 forms to 2027 forms and what counts toward your 60 minutes.
- Concentrated hours only work in one direction. Concentrated months accrued under the 2022 requirements, at 10% supervision, also meet the 2027 Concentrated requirement of 7.5%. Concentrated months accrued at 7.5% under the 2027 requirements cannot count as Concentrated under the 2022 requirements. Likewise, a month over 130 hours fits the 2027 requirements but would have to be adjusted down to 130 for a 2022 application.
- Pathway 2 coursework changes shape. From 2027, Basic Principles and Theory & Philosophy must each be a standalone course, Ethics must be a single 45-hour course, Organizational Behavior Management rises to 45 hours in its own course, and Behavior Assessment & Intervention needs 90 hours across two courses. If you had a VCS Coordinator Coursework Attestation on record as of December 31, 2025, the Handbook lets you use it only until December 31, 2026.
If you are not sure which side you will land on
The transition guidance recommends planning to meet both sets of requirements until you know. For fieldwork, that means completing both the 2022 and 2027 monthly forms each month with your supervisor, and tracking both the number of observations and their length in minutes.
If you are aiming for December, work backwards from December 31:
- Finish first. Your last fieldwork month has to be complete, along with your degree and coursework.
- Ask your registrar now how long official transcripts take, and whether they close over the winter break.
- On Pathway 2, check with your Pathway 2 Program Contact that the coursework attestation can go in on time.
- Submit, pay, and request transcripts together, as soon as you are eligible, and keep every confirmation.
- Prepare for 2027 anyway. If the timing looks tight, check your months against the 2027 requirements now, while there is still time to fix what falls short.
How FieldworkABA helps
FieldworkABA is a BCBA fieldwork tracker built around exactly this choice. Under Fieldwork Profile, you choose when you plan to apply: Before January 1, 2027 or On or After January 1, 2027. FieldworkABA then checks every month against that set of requirements, and the Met Requirements tab on Total hours lists the months that qualify. Switch the setting to see how the same months measure up under the other set. The same setting decides which form your monthly verification forms are generated on.
Here is the same Concentrated month under each setting. The hours themselves do not change.
Under the 2022 requirements, this month passes everything, including five observations with a client. Under the 2027 requirements, the hours and supervision still pass, but the month shows 0 of the 90 observation minutes a Concentrated month needs. That is the kind of month worth finding before you decide which side of December 31 to aim for.
See which side your months land on
Log your hours once, then switch between the 2022 and 2027 requirements to see which of your months qualify under each, before you choose when to apply.
